KNOWING WHAT YOU NEED
Sponge rubber extrusion is used in a broad range of applications. They can be an economical option as a seal, used to eliminate noise, and used to eliminate vibrations. EPDM is often a good choice for an outdoors seal and is one of the most common choices. There are other material options, including combinations of materials. We will talk about the various options.
First, let us discuss two version of sponge rubber, Open Cell Sponge and Closed Cell Sponge. This is the difference in the two types:
Open Cell Sponge Extrusion
Open cell sponge has cells that are not finished or have an air pocket associate with the material. Because the cells are open, water, dampness and any other type of residue can invade the cell structure.
You can think of open cell sponge being like a sponge you have at home to use for household chores or to wash your vehicle. When you dip your sponge in water and/or soap, the sponge absorbs the liquids. Just like the sponge absorbs the liquids, open cell sponge does the same.
Closed Cell Sponge Extrusion
Closed cell sponge has a greatly different cell structure to open cell. Closed cell sponge has cells that carry air in a finished pocket. Water, dampness, and any other type of residue are blocked from entering the cells of the sponge. If the intended use of the sponge is to act as a seal, this will be your choice.
Another contrast between open cell and closed cell sponge is the toughness and pressure rate of each option. Closed cell sponge is going to be much firmer.
